Motherhood in Focus: Celebrating the Unsung Heroes Behind the Lens
Motherhood Mini Sessions: Celebrating Moms Just As They Are
Moms are often the ones behind the camera, capturing fleeting moments of their children growing up, but how often do they get in front of the lens? This year, in honor of Mother's Day, I had the absolute joy of offering Motherhood Mini Sessions at my photography studio in Goshen, Indiana. These sessions weren’t just about photos—they were about celebrating moms, as they are and where they are in the beautiful chaos that is motherhood.
As a photographer (and someone raised by a single mother, myself), I hold a special place in my heart for moms and all that they represent in our lives and our communities. There’s something profoundly important about making sure they get to show up in photos. When their children are older, they won’t care if their mom’s hair was perfect or if she was wearing the “right” outfit. What will matter is that she’s there, captured in those precious moments that reflect the love and connection they shared.
Mackinzie and Ivy: A Special Bond
One of my sessions from the day was with Mackinzie and her daughter, Ivy - also known as Miss Ivy Lou! Mackinzie had just found out she was expecting her second child, which made this session even more meaningful. It was a beautiful and intentional time for mom and daughter to connect, soaking in those last few months before their family grows by one baby brother. We laughed, snuggled, and captured the magic of their bond.
At the end of the session, little Ivy wanted to take part in the process, so I handed her my camera and helped her snap a portrait of her stunning mama. There’s something so sweet about seeing a child capture their mother’s beauty from their own perspective - just pure, unfiltered love.
Why Moms Deserve To Be In The Frame
This day wasn’t just about taking photos; it was about creating memories to last a lifetime. Moms are the unsung heroes of everyday life, so often putting everyone else before themselves. BUT, when their children look back on these moments, they’ll be so grateful that their moms were present in these photos, showing up as they were - beautifully themselves, strong and real.
These sessions brought together new clients, familiar faces and even my godson, Oliver, who made the trip from Michigan to take part in the day! It was a reminder to me, as it should be for all moms, that you deserve to be celebrated, too.
