Capturing Portraits Amid History: A Fall Photoshoot at the Northern Michigan Asylum

There's something hauntingly beautiful about the Northern Michigan Asylum, known today as the Traverse City State Hospital. This historic landmark, standing tall with its striking architecture and endless stories, has always captivated those with an appreciation for both history and mystery. During my most recent trip, I took the opportunity to capture some updated headshots among its ivy-covered walls and vibrant fall leaves and today – Halloween – felt like the perfect time to share the magic and mystery that surrounded us.

A Return to Traverse City

Growing up, Traverse City was a place filled with childhood memories – family road trips, long weekends "up north" (a sentiment I heard all the time growing up a Michigander) and beach days along Lake Michigan’s shoreline. But this time, returning as an adult, I saw the city through a new lens. The asylum, once a place of curiosity and wonder from a distance, became the perfect backdrop for an eerie yet enchanting photoshoot. As the golden leaves blanketed the grounds, I felt both a sense of nostalgia as well as a sense of reverence for the stories held within these walls.

A Glimpse into the Past

Originally opened in 1885, the Northern Michigan Asylum was designed with a mission of compassion and rehabilitation. Unlike many institutions of its time, which often treated mental illness harshly, this hospital followed the "beauty is therapy" philosophy. Patients were encouraged to find peace and healing through nature, sunlight and meaningful activity. The sprawling grounds included gardens, farms and even a chapel, all intended to foster recovery.

Despite its good intentions, the hospital faced its share of challenges. Throughout the 1900s, advances in mental health treatment led to changing attitudes and methods and the hospital eventually closed in 1989. Today, its legacy lives on as a historic site, with many of the old buildings repurposed into shops, restaurants and even apartments. Still, the atmosphere of mystery and history is undeniable – every corner tells a story, especially in this autumn light.

Portraits with a Touch of the Past

Photographing here was both exhilarating and humbling. I aimed to capture the contrast between the vibrant present and the shadowy past. Against the textured stone walls and iron gates, it felt as though I, even if only for a glimpse of a moment, was getting to be a part of living history – inspired and alive, bringing energy and well intentions to a place that has seen so much. The golden hues of the fall leaves, paired with the rich architectural details of the asylum, created a scene that felt almost surreal.

For these headshots, the goal was to blend contemporary portraiture with the ambiance of this historic space. It’s amazing how the right setting can bring out unique qualities in people, helping them feel both grounded and empowered. In a place where countless individuals once sought healing, there’s a beauty in reclaiming the space to celebrate the present and honor the past.

Halloween Vibes in a Timeless Place

Being at this one time aslylum felt like stepping into a time capsule – each corridor and window held whispers of the past. But more than that, it was a reminder of resilience, transformation and the beauty of embracing both history and change. This Halloween, with the golden leaves around us and a chill in the air, the setting added a touch of haunting beauty to the entire experience.
